The Seed of the earth
Nakayama Natural Museum
In Nakayama, Shodoshima Island, inspired by a local man, Mr. Watari, who has worked alone to protect endangered species and local ecosystems, I made the work that embodies the cycle of nature. Unexpectedly, when I arrived there, the locals had already made arrangements to collect driftwood from a beach. We picked up driftwood and brought it back to the mountainous area, Nakayama. Mr. Watari came to the site every day, and before I knew it, we were discussing production methods and making the work for a month. The artwork aimed to become a new home for new lives and eventually return to the soil. After the completion, he and locals voluntarily explained the work to visitors and carried out maintenance. Even after the work disappeared 7 years later, the work remains in our hearts along with the memories we made together.
